BOONE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY Boone County Historical Society Civil War Collection
The Boone County Historical Society holds several small collections related to the Civil War. Presented here are the Joseph Cooper Babb Civil War Letters, the Diary of H. M. Cheavens, a photograph of a Civil War soldier, a photograph of the 4th Iowa Battery at Lee's surrender, and a 1931 address about the history of the Civil War in Boone County. The most significant of these are the Joseph Cooper Babb Civil War letter collection and the Diary of H. M. Cheavens.
The Joseph Cooper Babb Civil War letters document Babb's experience in a prison hospital in St. Louis. Babb lived in Columbia and was studying at the University of Missouri when he joined the company of Captain Young Purcell, a Confederate guerilla in Audrain and Boone Counties. Babb was captured by the Union Army in Miller County, MO and sent to Gratiot Street Prison in St. Louis, where he fell ill. He was moved to Johnson's Island Smallpox Hospital near St. Louis, where he died of smallpox in 1863. He was buried in a mass grave.
H. M. Cheavens, also a Confederate, was a teacher from Boone County. He was wounded at Wilson's Creek and afterwards joined Major General Sterling Price's army. Cheavens fought in the siege of Vicksburg and later went to medical school. In the late nineteenth century, he was the Boone County school commissioner.
The Joseph Cooper Babb letters date from December 19, 1862 to April 4, 1863. All letters are addressed to his parents. They document his time in the Gratiot Street Prison Hospital and his move to Johnson's Island. They primarily discuss his illness, and the final letter is from the hospital and informs Babb's parents of his death. The H. M. Cheavens diary dates from July 24, 1863 to August 1864. Written after the battle of Vicksburg, it documents some incidents in the Civil War and includes a descriptive list of the 3rd Missouri Battery. All items in the collection have been transcribed.
