HANNIBAL FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY
Immigrant Community of Ilasco, Missouri: Cement Company Town 1901-1965

Introduction

In an effort to preserve and document the history of the Immigrant Community that resulted from the opening of the Atlas Portland Cement Company in 1901, the Hannibal Free Public Library applied for and received a digitization grant from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the Missouri State Library. The library itself owned very few items. The project was advertised in the newspaper and letters were sent to organizations and individuals asking for their help. The community responded by allowing us to have their personal photos and memorabilia professionally digitized by Bob Lyner of St. Louis. We wish to thank the following for helping to create this a wonderful exhibit that gives the viewer a glimpse into the rich history of Ilasco:

David and Sally Polc of the Ilasco Historical Society

Frank Salter and the Continental Cement Company

Virginia Kitsock Mulhearn

Margaret Oslica Coleman

Billy Nemes
