MISSOURI UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy Student Registers, 1873-1922

Introduction

The Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, later the University of Missouri, Rolla, and currently the Missouri University of Science and Technology, was founded in 1870. Twenty-eight students were admitted in 1871 to the first technology school west of the Mississippi River. During the early years of the school, a preparatory course of study was offered for students who lacked secondary education, or whose secondary education had not adequately prepared them for college study. In 1873, the school’s first women were admitted to certificate programs in general subject areas. In 1885, the Missouri General Assembly required the university to provide a liberal academic course of study as well as technical coursework. The first foreign student was admitted in 1882. The preparatory course was abolished in 1892.
