This digital collection consists of forty-five streaming video files each representing a camera roll of 16mm motion picture film from the Shannon County Documentary Collection. The camera rolls were converted to high-definition digital video, synced to digitized audio recordings from the original production, and compressed for streaming on the web in 2005-2006. The original material was recorded on location in 1978-1979, for a public television project funded by an NEH grant to the former Center for Ozark Studies (COS) at MSU, and MSU holds all rights to its use. The material focuses on the rural Ozarks, specifically Shannon County, Missouri. Topics include politics, education, lost skills, the role and importance of kinship, timberwork, hunting, religion, isolation, journalism, law, health, and the significance of “place”. Two PBS documentaries, SHANNON COUNTY: HOME and SHANNON COUNTY: HEARTS OF THE CHILDREN, were produced using part of this material. Filmaker, Robert L. Moore, produced and directed the films with COS director, Robert B. Flanders, serving as executive producer.
The original documentary collection contains over sixty hours of broadcast-quality film and audio material. It also contains typed transcripts of interviews and over one thousand pages of production logs that describe the contents of each camera roll and sound roll in minute detail. The collection includes all original camera rolls (350), original sound rolls (320), work print, photos, audio masters, printing masters, transcripts, and logs. The collection also contains one brief film from the 1920s acquired by the producer of the Shannon County documentaries.
