BOONE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Westhoff Photo Collection

Introduction

The Westhoff Archive housed at the Boone County Historical Society has an enormous collection of glass plate negatives, film negatives, and photographs covering Columbia and Boone County from before 1910 to 1970. Photographs in the archive were taken by many different photographers; the images presented here were taken by Joe Douglass, Henry Holborn, and Wesley Blackmore. The subject matter includes formal portraits, clubs, athletic teams, social gatherings, local buildings and businesses. Some of the more atypical works include "Scenics" of old Boone County, Victorian-era household interiors, and a survey of area churches. Blackmore's work includes many images taken for area school yearbooks, including a large number of University of Missouri Savitar photos.

The Collection

This collection contains over 700 photographs from glass plate negatives taken from before 1910 to 1936, selected from the Westhoff Archive. These photographs provide a unique glimpse into the people and culture of Columbia, Boone County and Missouri in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
